An Introduction to Qingdao University

Qingdao University is situated in the eastern seaside city of Qingdao, China, between the coast of the Yellow Sea and Mount Fushan. Surrounded by a beautiful setting where the rich local culture is blended with the spirit of the times.

Qingdao University was founded in 1909. In 1993, the former Qingdao University merged with the Qingdao Medical College and Shandong Textile & Engineering College. Many years of continuous development have shaped Qingdao University to be a respectable comprehensive university with complete disciplines and excellent facilities. This ranks Qingdao University among the top institutions in the Shandong province.

The university has 34 colleges and 100 undergraduate majors, covering 11 major disciplines including literature, art, history, philosophy, science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, law and education. There are 9 post-doctoral mobile stations; There are 13 first-level doctoral programs (covering 78 second-level disciplines) and 2 professional doctoral programs (covering 18 professional fields); 37 first-level master's degree programs, 6 second-level master's degree programs (covering 192 second-level disciplines), and 23 professional master's degree programs (covering 81 professional fields).Qingdao University is an authorized Education Center of Chinese Language and Culture, HSK Test Center and DaF Test Center. Currently the enrollment of our university totals over 46,000 students, of whom over 9,600 are postgraduates and over 1,600 are international students.

Because of Qingdao University’s goal to maintain a high standard of modern management and globalization, the university is experiencing fast and steady development in international exchange and cooperation. It has established more than 120 exchange and cooperation projects with over 170 universities and institutions in more than 20 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. It has realized the substantial cooperation such as the exchange of teachers and students and joint training with foreign colleges and universities.

Qingdao University was approved by the ministry of education of the People’s Republic of China to admit international students in 1987. It is also authorized as an “Education Center of Chinese Language and Culture” by the Overseas Chinese Bureau of the State Council in 2004. As one of the Universities approved the qualification of recruiting international students by China Education Ministry in 1987，Qingdao University was approved as HSK test center by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) in 1997, and was approved as Host Institute for Confucius Institute Scholarship, Chinese Government Scholarship and Shandong Government Scholarship. QU was authorized as The Demonstration Education Base of Study in China by MOE in 2014 and was authorized as one of 27 universities which is in conformity with the International students Education standard in China.

Of the educational institutions approved by the State Education Commission to enroll international students, Qingdao University is one of its vanguard universities. Since 1987, there has been a gradual increase in the number of international students applying for our university. These students come from more than 60 countries, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Norway, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Russia, Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, and many more.

The Qingdao University Medical College is recognized by the World Health Organization and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Qingdao University is also in the name list of the first universities authorized by the Education Ministry of China to enroll international students to study clinical medicine (taught in English).

In 2006, Qingdao University started a 6-year MBBS program in English (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science). Now we have hundreds of international students from India, Thailand, Nepal and many more participating in this program.

The College of International Education has a very strong team of qualified faculty. Within the college, faculty members hold official Chinese Teaching Certificates, and the College of Chinese Language and Culture boasts advanced multi-media teaching facilities. The College of Chinese Language and Culture provides courses designed for the needs of international students, whether they are in a degree program or studying the Chinese language.

The College of International Education provides Chinese language instruction in the following three areas:

1. Undergraduate Chinese Study: Students with high school graduate certificate or those who have passed the 4th HSK are qualified to apply. After being accepted by the school, the duration of study is four years. Students who finish all required courses are awarded Graduate Certificates and Bachelor’s Degrees.

2. Chinese Language Study: The College offer 8 levels of Chinese instruction that range from that of a beginning student to an advanced scholar. Categories such as Oral Chinese, Tourist Chinese, Business Chinese, and Chinese Culture can be prepared for special programs. After language instruction, there are afternoon courses available in Traditional Chinese Calligraphy, Painting, Music, Gongfu and Taiji, and more.

3. Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages: Those wishing to teach Chinese as professional instructors are welcome to enroll in a two-year, specialized program in the training of foreign language teachers. This program trains faculty to teach written and spoken Chinese to non-native speakers. Scholarships are available for this program, so apply quickly.
